In the United States, we spend far more on health care than other countries do, yet by many measures, the quality of our care comes up short. Simply put, we're not getting what we pay for.
To date, efforts to bring our unsustainable spending under control have had limited impact. To truly change course, we need breakthroughs in the way we deliver care and in how patients interact with the health care system.
The Commonwealth Fund’s Breakthrough Health Care Opportunities program aims to discover, develop, and test transformative ideas, strategies, and tools that can lead to dramatically better health care access and quality, lower costs, and improved health outcomes.
We’re seeking alternatives approaches that are capable of positively and profoundly disrupting the status quo in health care. These practices may involve emerging technologies, innovative care processes, or new incentive programs. Our task is to identify those that have potential and to fund work that reduces barriers—including policy, cultural, business case, and technical obstacles—to their realization.
Currently, the program is funding two initiatives:
- The IT-Enabled Consumer, which seeks to empower patients to access and use their health data to manage their care and engage with the health system.
- Incentives 2.0, which is testing the next generation of provider incentives—those grounded in behavioral economics.
