Since the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplaces opened and states began to expand Medicaid eligibility, uninsured rates among Latinos have declined for the first time in decades.

Still, Latinos continue to have the highest uninsured rates among major U.S. racial or ethnic groups, according to a new blog post from The Commonwealth Fund’s Michelle M. Doty, Sophie Beutel, Petra W. Rasmussen, and Sara R. Collins. The authors explain that despite Latinos’ historic gains in coverage, 34 percent remain uninsured, compared with 18 percent of blacks and 10 percent of whites.
The authors also look at how coverage rates vary by state, and the best approaches to reaching the remaining uninsured.
