The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine will examine how nursing home care is delivered, regulated, and measured for quality, with an emphasis on the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study will convene a panel of experts and will cover a broad range of issues, some of which include the link between current regulatory structures and outcomes, consistency of oversight and enforcement, nursing home payment models, evidence on effective interventions, effectiveness of survey structures and rating systems, and alternative models to promote innovation. The results will be distilled into a set of policy recommendations to ensure the safety and high-quality care of nursing home residents and staff.
