This project aims to provide an overview and critical analysis of currently implemented and launched bundled payment initiatives in high-income countries. The comparative framework, looking at bundles across countries, will include the key design elements of bundled payment models: included conditions, care components, payment methodology, entity receiving the bundled payment, time-period of an episode, risk-sharing properties, risk adjustment methods, use of quality measurement, distribution of payment among participating providers. Findings will be translated into concrete and actionable lessons for policymakers in the United States and the Netherlands, as well as other countries. A network of country experts will be identified to gain insight about key design elements of their bundled payment models. This study will contribute valuable, detailed, up-to-date empirical evidence about how bundled payments are being implemented in other health care systems and their impact.
