This project will: 1) combine reviews of peer-reviewed medical literature with policy analyses to assess the evidence supporting proposed legislation for improving maternal morbidity and mortality; 2) identify opportunities and gaps in the evidence and new areas of research for supporting successful implementation of this work; and, 3) provide “on call” evidence reviews for emerging policy and legislation. Jodie Katon and her team at the University of Washington will do this by reviewing upcoming federal and state legislation that pertains to maternal morbidity and mortality as well state-level quality improvement initiatives. The team will conduct ongoing literature reviews to summarize the evidence and effectiveness of the approaches. Additionally, they will review Congressional documents and state health department websites to assess the involvement of community-based involvement in design and implementation of the relevant programs.
