This project will support increased coverage of health equity by The 19th, with the aim of presenting the inequities alongside potential solutions that would drive lasting change. The organization is in a unique position to tell the stories of women, people of color, and families, as the majority of its journalists and editors are women of color and have firsthand experience of inequities in the health system. In addition to these stories, the grant would support The 19th’s summit on gender and racial disparities in health care, to be held on March 24, 2022. Potential topics include racial disparities in maternal health and reproductive health care (i.e. gynecology), health system quality, equity and access for LGBTQ+ people, and navigating the health system with a disability. The summit will include several speakers, panels, video vignettes, and possibly an artistic performance.
