On August 9, 2013, more than 150 congressional and administration staff, journalists, and other Washington, D.C., policy stakeholders convened for a briefing to discuss the preparedness of states and the federal government for open enrollment in the exchanges beginning October 1. Sarah Dash, of the Health Policy Institute at Georgetown University, discussed the results of her Commonwealth Fund-supported study of state-based health insurance exchanges, or marketplaces.
Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, of the Dapartment of Health and Human Services' Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, spoke about the federal government’s preparations to operate federally facilitated and partnership exchanges. Rebecca Pearce of Maryland and Joseph Thompson of Arkansas talked about their respective states' preparations to open their exchanges and Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans, described how insurance plans are preparing for the opening of the exchanges. The briefing was comoderated by Ed Howard of the Alliance for Health Reform and The Commonwealth Fund's Sara Collins, Ph.d..
