Choosing Wisely

There are “Choosing Wisely” campaigns to combat the overuse of health care in more than 20 countries. In each country, campaigns partner with national clinician societies to making recommendations about unnecessary and commonly overused medical practices that can harm to patients. In 2016, leaders from seven Choosing Wisely campaigns — in the United States, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan and Australia — participated in a consensus process to prioritize their top 10 recommendations across campaigns. Selections were guided by the frequency of occurrence of the overused practices, measurability of the recommendations, and the potential to avoid harm to patients. The top 10 were  chosen from among more 1,000 recommendations across specialties and countries.

The cases below show the way different countries are implementing innovations in practice and research based each of the top 10 recommendations.

Choosing Wisely: An International Movement Toward Appropriate Medical Care

Choosing Wisely, is an international movement that began in the United States and has since spread around the world. It was launched in 2012 by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Foundation to advance a national dialogue on how to avoid unnecessary medical tests, treatments, and procedures. Today, more than 20 countries have developed campaigns based on a simple but compelling premise: conversations between doctors and patients can help patients choose care that is based on evidence, truly necessary, not duplicative, and free from harm.

“More Is Not Always Better”: One Campaign to Stop Overuse of Medical Care

If you have a cold or cough, an antibiotic may not be the cure. If you have a minor injury from playing hockey, a CT scan of the head may not be necessary. Then why do so many doctors prescribe these, and what can be done to stop it?

On this episode of The Dose, Shanoor Seervai interviews Wendy Levinson, M.D. and Karen Born, who run the Choosing Wisely Canada campaign. Based on the philosophy, ‘more is not always better,’ Choosing Wisely is a campaign to help clinicians and patients engage in a dialogue to avoid unnecessary medical tests, treatments, and procedures.
