Information derived from the Promoting Healthy Development Survey (PHDS) in pediatric practices has significant potential to shape and drive improvements in the quality of health care provided to children. Leading methodologies place at the center of effective quality improvement the ongoing measurement of performance and the use of this information to inform, shape, and track improvements in care. By involving both the parents and health care providers in the quality improvement loop—a concept known as parent-centered quality improvement—a new systems change strategy can be implemented. It should have the capacity to:
- inform both providers and parents about what comprises quality of care;
- provide practice-level information that is based on parental report and incorporates parents' preferences and needs; and
- engage providers and parents as partners in effective strategies that might result in improvements in care that would not otherwise occur.
The reduced-item survey, a shorter version of the PHDS, and manual will enable pediatric health care providers to implement the PHDS in their offices. The materials provided in the manual offer health care providers guidance in:
- identifying parents who should receive the survey,
- administering the survey in their offices, and
- reporting the survey findings to health care providers and parents.
