U.K. Health Secretary Underscores Importance of Empowering Local Groups

In response to concerns that the National Health Service (NHS) Commissioning Board Authority will increase its own responsibilities, the U.K. Health Secretary Andrew Lansley recently emphasized the importance of decentralizing power in the NHS in a letter to the chairman. Under the recently passed health reform legislation, more authority was given to local clinical commissioning groups. While the legislation also created the NHS Commissioning Board Authority to oversee the clinical commissioning groups, the intent was to give the majority of the power to localities by putting 60 percent of the budget into the hands of GP-led clinical commissioning groups.
