U.K. Health Care Hotline Helps More than a Million Patients

The National Health Service's (NHS) free hotline for care, NHS 111, received its one-millionth call in June. The hotline, which was started in August of 2010, is used by people who need fast but not emergency medical care, those who have questions about where to get the best services, and those who don't have a general practitioner to call for health-related questions. Callers speak to qualified, experienced nurses who give treatment advice, book appointments, or transfer them to someone who can help. NHS 111 will ultimately replace the earlier iteration of a health care hotline, NHS Direct, which handles a more limited range of cases.
