Proposal to Change GP Contract to Reward Better Patient Care

U.K. Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt unveiled a new proposal for changing the way general practitioners (GPs) are rewarded for the care they provide to patients. Under the new contract, GPs would be rewarded for taking steps that directly support and benefit patients, rather than for routine office functions like record-keeping. Such actions would include helping patients control their blood pressure and cholesterol and better assessment of patients at risk for dementia.

The change will focus on providing better diagnosis and care to patients with diabetes, hypertension, lung disease, heart failure, arthritis, and dementia, and is expected to improve care for around 1.5 million patients in 2013–14.
