Nearly $1.5 Billion in Savings from Medical Loss Ratio Requirement in 2011

Consumers across the country saw nearly $1.5 billion in health insurer rebates and overhead cost savings in 2011 as a result of the Affordable Care Act's medical loss ratio provision, which requires health insurers to spend at least 80 percent of premium dollars on health care or quality improvement activities, or else pay a rebate to their customers, according to a new Commonwealth Fund study of all 50 states.
