National Program of Action Against Suicide Launched

In September, the government launched the 2011–2014 National Program of Action Against Suicide, with a budget of €15 million. As the second leading cause of death among young adults, suicide is a major public health concern. The program looks at all age groups and focuses both on efforts to prevent suicide and on treatment for individuals following an attempted suicide.

To accomplish these goals, the program sets out 49 activities, including: public campaigns about depression, promoting the role of mobile technology in suicide prevention, using the Internet to reach youth at risk for suicide, and developing specific steps of suicide care management. Another of the program's main objectives is to improve data quality and monitoring of suicides and attempted suicides, among both the general population and within specific populations.

The program is a partnership between the Department of Justice and Freedom, the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Health, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Associations, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries, Rural Affairs and Planning, the Ministry of Solidarity and Social Cohesion, and the Ministry of Health Education and Research. Regional health agencies will be responsible for the coordination and implementation of the various efforts outlined in the program.
