The U.K. government has issued its first-ever mandate to the National Health Service (NHS), outlining priorities for the next two years and laying out what every patient in England can expect from general practitioners, hospitals, and NHS organizations. The mandate was drafted after consultations with the public, health professionals, and key organizations throughout the health care system. The mandate sets objectives such as cutting premature death from the leading causes of death, enabling everyone to book their general practitioner (GP) appointments online by 2015, and improving care for new mothers. The NHS Commissioning Board will be in charge of leading the efforts to meet the mandate's objectives.
