Lessons in Delivering Patient-Centered Care

Two recent Commonwealth Fund–supported studies glean lessons from efforts to organize primary care around the needs and desires of patients.

  • In a study of New Orleans safety-net clinics in Medical Care (Feb. 2013), researchers examined patients' ratings of health care accessibility, care coordination, and confidence in the quality and safety of care. A majority of the city’s clinics have achieved recognition from the National Committee for Quality Assurance as patient-centered medical homes.
  • Health plan leaders and providers in Washington State, a leader in patient-centered innovation, were interviewed for a study in BMC Family Practice (Dec. 2012) about ways in which organizations identify an approach and goals for achieving patient-centered care.
