First Public Report on Medical Errors Issued in Quebec

The Quebec Health and Social Services Department announced in April that the first public report of medical treatment errors in the province will be released in December 2011. The report will cover in-hospital falls by patients; faulty medication, treatment or diet; equipment or supply problems; and incorrect medical files. According to Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc, 204 of 277 (74% participation rate) public health and social service institutions–including hospitals, public-system medical clinics, and seniors' residences–have contributed standardized data to the project since April 1. The remaining institutions are expected to submit their findings by next fall. The first report will include data between April 1 and September 30, 2011, with subsequent reports to be published twice a year. Minister Bolduc believes that such reports will help to "improve and put into place mechanisms that could correct situations in one or more institutions" and emphasized that the report is not intended to seek fault or place blame.
