Financial Incentives, Quality Improvement Programs, and the Adoption of Clinical Information Technology

March 24, 2009--Published in the April 2009 issue of Medical Care, this national survey of all medical groups and independent practice associations (IPAs) with 20 or more physicians found that external incentives such as pay-for-performance and quality improvement activities increase the likelihood that an organization will adopt clinical information technology. The study was supported by grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Commonwealth Fund, and the California Healthcare Foundation.
