A new Commonwealth Fund–supported study in Health Affairs, led by Harvard Medical School's David C. Grabowski, found that nursing homes that used telemedicine to provide after-hours care significantly reduced hospitalization rates for their residents. But given that savings from the technology, which allows patients to visit with physicians virtually by way of two-way video or other tools, largely accrue to Medicare and not nursing homes themselves, it will be necessary to create a business case for investing in this service, the researchers say.
