In Sweden, More Health Care Spending Does Not Mean Better Quality

An annual comparison of Sweden’s 21 counties published by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions found that the capital region of Stockholm had the highest health care costs per capita in the country. Despite an annual cost of approximately 26,300 kr per person in 2016, the region ranked only 15th for quality of care. The county of Västra Götaland in the Southwest had the lowest health care spend per person, a full 16 percent below Stockholm. The Stockholm region has the highest number of doctor visits per person, as well as the highest concentration of private health care providers.
