Nineteen European Countries Bid to Host the European Medicines Agency After London

Following the U.K.’s vote to leave the European Union, the currently London-based European Medicines Agency is looking for a new home starting in 2019. The agency is responsible for evaluating, monitoring, and ensuring the safety of new drugs and medicinal products, similar to the role of the Food and Drug Administration in the U.S. Nineteen European cities submitted their bids to the European Council in the hopes of hosting the agency. The European Commission will evaluate the entries according to six criteria, including accessibility, business continuity, and access to jobs, schools, and health care for the family members of employees relocating from London. The winning city is expected to be announced in November 2017.
