This spring, the Swiss Federal Council passed a federal law introducing the “Electronic Patient Dossier.” As of April, Swiss hospitals, nursing homes, and birthing centers have five years to introduce electronic health records, while physicians and other outpatient centers may do so on a voluntary basis. The Federal Office of Public Health emphasized that privacy issues are of utmost importance. A unique patient identification number will be assigned to each patient as part of this initiative.
