In comparing health insurers’ profitability in 2013 and 2014, the years before and after the health insurance marketplaces were launched, researchers led by the Wake Forest University School of Law’s Mark A. Hall found that profit and loss levels in the individual market were substantially the same for established insurers with significant enrollment. Carriers performed better in states that operated their own marketplaces than in states that relied on the federal marketplace.
