What’s Holding Back Development of IT Tools for Care Coordination?

No one disputes that greater use of health information technology could improve the coordination of care, especially for high-need patients, and produce savings for the U.S. health system. But according to new research in the American Journal of Managed Care by The Commonwealth Fund’s Eric Schneider, M.D., and colleagues, the creation of new health IT tools is limited by four obstacles: the lack of a clear definition of “coordination,” the sheer diversity of physician practice patterns and workflows, the missing business case, and simple resistance to change.
