Robert L. Phillips, Jr., M.D., M.S.P.H., is executive director of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). He also directs ABFM’s Center for Professionalism and Value in Health Care, which aims to create space in which patients, health professionals, payers, and policy makers can work to renegotiate the social contract. Phillips currently practices in a community-based residency program in Fairfax, Va., and is professor of family medicine at Georgetown University and Virginia Commonwealth University.
