Dr. Benton serves as a Public Health Medical Officer for the State of California Department of Public Health and Medical Director for the state's Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. She is a board-certified attending general surgeon who has worked at Kaiser Permanente, Stanford University Hospital and Clinics, and Alameda Count Medical Center. Dr. Benton serves as president of Sinkler Miller Medical Association, the San Francisco-Oakland East Bay Chapter of the National Medical Association, and is on the governing council of the California Public Health Association. She is medical director of Project New Start Oakland, the Alameda County Laser Tattoo Removal Program, and an appointed commissioner and chair for the Alameda County Public Health Department. Dr. Benton is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Breast Surgeons. Her research focuses on multimedia and technology-based applications of medicine for education and improving health. She has been awarded several grants including a grant to publish a book on the history of African American physicians in practice in the Oakland Bay area. Dr. Benton received her medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, completed a General Surgery Residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Rutgers/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, as well as one year of plastic surgery training at University of California San Francisco. She has been a Commonwealth Fund Harvard University Fellow, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Urban Health Initiative Leadership Fellow, and an Academic Fellow of the California Wellness Foundation's Violence Prevention Initiative.
