Joshua M. Sharfstein, M.D., is associate dean for public health practice and training and professor of the practice in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. From January 2011 to December 2014, he served as secretary of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where he helped establish the Maryland model of hospital global budgeting. Sharfstein previously served as principal deputy commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and as health commissioner for Baltimore City.
