Biography at time of Harkness Fellowship: Jörg Haslbeck, M.Sc.N., a 2008–09 Commonwealth Fund Harkness/B Braun Stiftung Fellow in Health Care Policy and Practice, is a research associate at the Department of Health Service Research and Institute of Nursing Science at the Bielefeld University School of Public Health. He is also the academic executive of the nursing research network North Rhine-Westphalia. Haslbeck previously worked as a research associate for the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia on the parliamentary commission of inquiry, "Present Situation and Future of Nursing Care in North Rhine-Westphalia," and as a staff nurse at the Herdecke Community and Nuremberg City Hospitals. His research interests include chronic illness and self-management, and he has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Pflege and Zeitschrift für ärztliche Fortbildung und Qualität im Gesundheitswesen. In 1996, Haslbeck was awarded Best Diploma in Nursing at the Nursing College of the Nuremberg City Hospital. He holds a Doctor of Public Health from Bielefeld University School of Public Health and a master's degree in nursing from Witten/Herdecke University.

 

Project: Jörg Haslbeck explored the self-management needs and abilities of the elderly living alone with chronic conditions – a particularly vulnerable population with often complex health care needs.  He first conducted a literature review, followed by expert interviews including with physicians, nurses, social workers.
