Joan Stieber is a lawyer and senior health policy analyst in the Office of Legislation, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Washington, D.C. She is responsible for monitoring and analyzing key Medicare legislation, including health promotion and preventive health, and is the contact with Congressional staff on these issues.
Project: Her project compared the coverage of prevention services in Australia and U.S. medicare, and efforts to apply evidence-based decision-making processes to prevention (including the role of cost-effectiveness). She undertook the project at La Trobe University.
Highlights: People familiar with international exchange programs told me my fellowship would be a "life changing experience" and they were absolutely right. The opportunity to absorb both the cultural life and the policy complexities of another country has been invaluable and will influence my future work and personal outlook in countless ways.
