Anna Sommers, Ph.D., joined the staff of the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission in July 2012, where she directs studies of access and quality. Formerly a senior health researcher at HSC, Sommers’s research has focused on access to care, physician participation in Medicaid, and emergency department use. She previously worked as a senior research analyst at the Hilltop Institute at the University of Maryland, providing technical assistance to state Medicaid and CHIP programs. Prior to that, she worked as a research associate in the Health Policy Center at the Urban Institute, conducting studies on access to care, spending, quality, and eligibility in Medicaid and other public programs. Sommers received her doctoral degree in health services research, policy, and administration from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and a master’s degree in public affairs from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota.
