For the Commonwealth Fund/Local Media Foundation Health Reporting Fellows, the Association of Health Care Journalists (AHCJ) proposes a training and development plan for the three reporters the Fund anticipates supporting. The key components of this plan include: 1. Education: attendance at AHCJ’s three major in-person training events during the program year. Those would be the large national conference, a mid-year workshop and a larger fall workshop. 2. Development: membership within AHCJ, customized in-person kick-off training, routine cohort calls, and a webinar introducing the group to all the AHCJ resources. 3. Mentoring: assigning of a professional mentor for the project period based on the needs and preferences of the fellow and a Slack channel where the reporters can talk with each other about story efforts, share resources and be notified of opportunities by the program staff. For the Journalism & Women Symposium (JAWS), AHCJ would create a JAWS–AHCJ Conference Fellowship. This would cover up to six journalists selected for the Commonwealth Fund–supported JAWS health mentorship to attend AHCJ's Health Journalism 2023. The AHCJ component would include travel costs, lodging, registration and membership. For WHYY, AHCJ would facilitate the attendance at Health Journalism 2023 for one Commonwealth-supported outlet reporter. The AHCJ component would include travel costs, lodging, registration, and membership.
