This grant will support two reporting projects with STAT: 1. Racism and Medicine: A two-year, full-time reporting beat focused on racism embedded in medicine and science. Potential lines of inquiry include examinations of recent pushback against efforts to erase health disparities and the problematic uses of race in genetics and precision medicine. This grant also will support a second season of Color Code as well as an expansion of the podcast’s brand to include events and written pieces. 2. Climate Change and Health Care: A six-month engagement exploring what is being done, and what more needs to happen, to lower emissions in the health care sector. This work aligns with STAT reporters’ knowledge of pharmaceutical, device, and other businesses that supply health systems.
