This project will survey the landscape of consumerism in the U.S. health care delivery system and leverage these lessons to improve demand for high‐value health care by conceptualizing the roles and interactions of stakeholder groups (beyond just patients) in consumer decisions in health care settings, reviewing the evidence on how consumers make decisions in health care, and articulating where policies to enhance consumerism in the delivery system have either achieved or failed to achieve their desired goals. The project will provide recommendations for fostering health care competition going forward and identify gaps in the evidence of how to improve the demand side for high‐value health care.
