The 5 Percent: Solutions Reporting on Care for the Nation's Sickest

Through partnerships with the Atlantic and the Washington Monthly, this project will produce a series of feature article in these two high-profile outlets that highlight new approaches to caring for high-need, high-cost patients. Solutions Journalism Network has worked in more than 50 newsrooms to promote rigorous and compelling reporting on responses to urgent social problems. David Bornstein and Pulitzer prize–winner Tina Rosenberg, the two project leads, have substantial journalism resumes, including coauthoring the “Fixes” column in the New York Times. Past successful projects include “Education Lab,” a collaboration with the Seattle Times and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and “Responding to Violence,” a series from the Detroit Free Press, PBS NewsHour, and WNYC radio.

By articulating the scope of the problem and highlighting solutions, more attention will be focused on the issue during the presidential transition period. Products will be targeted to the public as well as to leaders in public policy and health care.
